The acid-base balance maintains the internal environment within a tightly regulated range. Arterial blood is slightly alkaline, with a pH of approximately 7.4. The Austrian health portal cites 7.36 to 7.44 as a guideline and explicitly refers to the respective laboratory reference ranges. [1] A pH level as high as possible is not a health goal.
First, determine what was measured
The statement „My pH is too low“ is incomplete without specifying the sample. Blood and urine are different types of test specimens. The reason for the test, the measurement method, and other findings are also part of the interpretation. A value should therefore not be compared to just any color scale from another test. [1]
For a consultation, write down the exact description on the lab form. Ask what medical question the test was intended to answer and whether a condition requiring treatment was actually identified. This is more helpful than a general diagnosis of „body acidity“ based on nonspecific symptoms.
Chemical buffers react quickly
Buffer systems can mitigate changes in hydrogen ion concentration. These include, among others, proteins, phosphate, and the bicarbonate-carbonic acid system. Hemoglobin in red blood cells also plays a role. These chemical reactions work in conjunction with regulation by respiration and the kidneys. [2]
A buffer does not automatically eliminate the cause of a disturbance. It initially limits the change. For a medical explanation, it is therefore important to determine what stress has occurred and whether the affected organs can respond appropriately.
The lungs and kidneys perform different functions
The lungs influence acid-base balance through the exhalation of carbon dioxide. The kidneys regulate, among other things, the excretion of hydrogen ions and the handling of bicarbonate. This adjustment occurs more slowly than immediate chemical buffering. [2]
This does not imply a recommendation to breathe more rapidly on purpose to reduce acidity. The contributions of the various organs must be considered in context. Abnormal breathing is a medical finding and not a suitable reason for a self-designed regulatory program.
Blood gas analysis takes several parameters into account
An arterial blood gas analysis measures, among other things, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and pH; bicarbonate can also be measured. This allows for the assessment of respiration and acid-base balance. The test is used, for example, in cases of certain respiratory problems or conditions that may disrupt this balance. [3]
Acidosis and alkalosis refer to medical conditions characterized by an acidic or basic state, respectively. The cause and the relationship to other parameters determine the course of action. A single pH value is therefore not sufficient for a complete diagnosis. [1][3]
If the patient is clearly confused, has noticeably deep or rapid breathing, or experiences a severe deterioration in condition, medical assistance should be sought. Such symptoms do not allow for a reliable self-diagnosis, but they may warrant a medical evaluation. [3]
What a Urine test strip Reveals
Urine pH can be affected by diet, medications, and medical conditions. Measuring it can be useful when specific concerns arise, such as certain risks of kidney stones or disorders of renal acid regulation. The reference range differs significantly from that of blood. [4]
Acidic urine therefore does not indicate dangerous blood acidosis. The Austrian health portal explains that healthy people effectively regulate their blood pH, while urine pH fluctuates more widely. It cites no scientific evidence to support general deacidification through an alkaline fast. [5]
Classify Nutrition and Treatment in a Targeted Manner
Vegetables or other easily digestible foods can be part of a suitable diet plan without necessarily being used to treat a blood disorder. A rigid classification of all meals as “good alkaline” or “bad acidic” does not account for medical guidelines. Evaluate crash diets and nutritional plans complements this distinction.
If a medication has been prescribed by a doctor, clarify its specific indication and the recommended follow-up visits. Do not change your medication on your own in an attempt to influence a urine test strip. [4] Medical Classification of Fatigue It also shows why exhaustion should not be explained solely by the buzzword “acidosis.” As a frequency expert, I consider a precise correlation between measurements, findings, and the actual treatment goal to be essential.
