The History of Electrotherapy: What Old Equipment Cases Tell Us
Preserved devices and user manuals show how ideas for electrical treatments found their way into everyday life and how their claims can be tested.Continue reading

The history of frequency therapy intertwines technical inventions, medical hopes, and changing conceptions of the body. Herbert Eder In this section, we explore historical ideas about devices and the people associated with them. The focus is on what the historical sources actually reveal and how their accounts can be interpreted today.
Historical high-frequency devices, for example, used glass electrodes that made electrical discharges visible. Original objects in museum collections provide insights into their construction, accessories, and how they were used at the time. Such artifacts show how technology became part of everyday life and what expectations were associated with it. A contemporary advertising claim and a documented technical specification must be interpreted as different types of information.
A specific example is Georges Lakhovsky’s U.S. patent specification on oscillating circuits for multiple wavelengths, published in 1934. Among other things, it describes concentric open rings. The specification can be examined as a source for his device concept. Whether a method based on this is beneficial to health is a separate question that is not answered by the technical description. Due diligence is also necessary when considering articles about Rife, Clark, and other frequently cited individuals: What comes from an original publication, and what comes from later reports?
The publication date, author, device design, and language usage at the time are helpful for classification. Terms can change in meaning; collective terms used later may obscure differences. It also remains to be clarified whether a device available today actually corresponds to the historical design. A shared name alone does not answer this question.
The articles encourage readers to examine sources with curiosity and care. They describe ideas, controversies, and lines of technical development without deriving a current treatment recommendation from an early invention. Those who subsequently wish to understand the scientific evaluation of a specific application will find the relevant methodological foundations in the “Research and Studies” section. In this way, history becomes a comprehensible exploration of knowledge and its evolution.
